Lunch with Matt Brady

Just two days after a frantic comeback victory in Williamsburg, Matt Brady addressed the media in his weekly press luncheon Monday.

"We made a strategic adjustment...were gonna not try to get 16 in the next game here against William & Mary," Brady said.

The Dukes were able to overcome a 19 point deficit Saturday night to take down the Tribe, 69-67 to gain the three seed in this weekends CAA tournament in Richmond.

The performance included a 36 point outing from A.J. Davis, a career high...off the bench.

"We're actually now debating whether we should debate my geniusness...if that's a word," Brady said  of the possibility of starting Davis this weekend. "If you're going to get out to a fast start, it makes sense to have your best offensive player on the court."

Davis has just five starts this season. However he is averaging over 22 points/game in his last five games; three straight games with 20+.

"Strangely I have a growing confidence in A.J. Davis," Brady added.

As you should know by now, JMU will face Tony Shaver's squad again this Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Brady says he is hoping to get 30 minutes out of forward Rayshawn Goins. If you recall, Brady wasn't pleased with Goins' first half defensive performance saying, "he didn't show up" and benched him early in the second half for matchup purposes. With Goins on the bench, JMU usually goes with a five guard lineup for speed and penetration.

"Our five best defensive players are guards," Brady said.

When asked if other teams should fear a matchup with the Dukes, Brady responded, "I think they should be. We're very athletic."

"They have four guys that can really make shots," Brady said of the Tribe. "Some of their strengths are not our strengths."

The last 11 teams who have gone into the tournament 2-0 against an opponent with a third matchup  scheduled have also won that contest.
